Swans
Madrid, Spain 2024
(A 6-meter tall sculpture, hand-knitted from steel wire.)
At Teatros del Canal
With Elena Rocabert
A reflection of the moon, a cloud, vapor, dew, ripples in the water, and the lake: a reference in space.
An ambiguous form, shape shifting like the dancers, a glimpse of a swan almost in reach then it dissipates.
Moving beyond the boundaries of classical dance, yet traces linger.
Féth Fíada, a magical veil in Irish mythology often appearing as a thick mist. Known as the druids fog, it allows supernatural beings to move freely, considered a bridging of the gap between worlds.
For two months, the same stitch is repeated over and over, perfecting itself with the same rigor as classical ballet techniques. Muscle memory. Repetition, yet never the same.
From the context of fantasy and darkness provided by the second act of classical ballet, and with a certain notion of a second chapter in the lives of these performers, this creation seeks to become an exploration of each artist's altered identity. It imprints a poetic and necessarily never-conclusive exploration onto an autobiographical narrative, delving into the place where classical dance resides within them.
