Rince na Druid (Dance of the starlings)
The Old Irish phrase 'Fite Fuaite,' meaning inextricably mixed up or firmly interwoven, captures the essence of this series. It represents the intricate blending of past and present, technology and tradition, memory and materiality.
In ancient Celtic tradition, women held positions of high status as druids, seers and poets, acting as guardians of sacred practices, wisdom and nature.
Textile techniques, cultivated and preserved by women throughout history, are often relegated and considered mere skills rather than technological achievements. A prime example is the Jacquard loom, created by Jean-Marie Jacquard, considered the first programmable machine in history, which inspired Ada Lovelace in developing the Analytical Engine, capable of performing any algebraic operation. It could be said that this discovery was a precursor to the first computers.
A testament to the often unrecognised complexities of feminine technology, and the significant role of textiles in industrial advancement.
